With the current heatwave making it difficult to keep cool, many people are leaving windows open during the day and at night. While it's important to stay comfortable, it's also worth remembering that warmer weather and lighter evenings can create opportunities for opportunist burglars.
As summer arrives, burglary patterns often change. Open windows, lighter evenings and properties left empty during holidays can all increase the risk of becoming a target. The good news? A few simple steps can make a big difference.
PROTECT YOUR HOME Lock doors and windows, even when you're at home or enjoying the garden Close and secure downstairs windows at night or when leaving a room Use window restrictors rather than leaving windows fully open
DON'T FORGET THE GARDEN Lock sheds, garages and outbuildings Store tools, ladders and equipment securely – they can be used to gain entry Keep gates closed and locked where possible
MAKE YOUR HOME LOOK OCCUPIED Use timer switches for lights when you're out or away Ask a neighbour to collect post or move bins Wait until you return home before posting holiday updates on social media
KEEP VEHICLES SECURE Lock your vehicle and double-check it's secure Remove valuables and keep keys out of sight, away from doors and windows Park in well-lit areas or use a garage if available
LOOK OUT FOR YOUR COMMUNITY & VULNERABLE NEIGHBOURS Look out for your community and vulnerable neighbours Keep an eye on neighbours' properties when they're away and report any suspicious activity.
Chief Inspector Matt Dickinson, said: "Many burglaries happen because an opportunity presents itself. By making your home look secure and lived in, and making it difficult for opportunists, you can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a target. If something doesn't look right, please report it to us. Even if there isn't an immediate response, that information helps us develop a clearer picture of what's happening in our communities and enables us to target our efforts where they're needed most."
